Glass remembers how it was made. Every apothecary bottle carries physical evidence of its manufacturing method, and because those methods changed in a documented sequence, the evidence is a date range you can read with your eyes and a loupe. This is the method — the same one museum catalogers and serious dealers use, and one no reproduction fully survives.

The logic: manufacturing eras leave fingerprints

Bottle production moved through overlapping eras — free-blown glass worked entirely by hand; mold-blown glass shaped in hinged molds but finished by hand; and machine-made glass, fully automatic after the automatic bottle machine spread through the industry in the early 1900s. Each era's process left marks the next era didn't, so the identification question is always: which process made this bottle? Step one: the base

Turn the bottle over. A pontil scar — the rough or ground-smooth mark where a pontil rod held the bottle during hand finishing — is the classic early tell, generally pointing before the later 19th century when snap-case tools replaced the rod. Its absence proves nothing (the tools changed mid-century), but its presence is strong early evidence. Machine-made bases show their own signatures: suction scars, valve marks, and molded maker or plant markings that are themselves researchable. Honest base wear — a ring of fine scratching where the bottle sat for decades — belongs on any bottle claiming age.

Step two: the seams

Mold seams are the workhorse evidence. On mold-blown bottles finished by hand, seams fade out below the lip, because the lip was formed afterward with hand tools — the seam stops. On machine-made bottles, seams run continuously up and over the finished lip, because the machine formed the whole bottle in one operation. That single observation — where does the seam end? — divides the hand era from the machine era more reliably than any other check, and it takes five seconds. Step three: the finish and closure

The lip ("finish," in the trade) refines the story. Applied finishes — a separate ring of glass added and tooled onto the neck — show a visible junction and point earlier than tooled finishes formed from the neck's own glass. Ground-glass stoppers, the signature pharmacy closure, were lapped to their individual bottles: matched frosted grinding on stopper and neck, and a seat without rocking, argue the pair grew old together. Screw threads molded into the glass are machine-era evidence. A closure technology that disagrees with the seam evidence usually means a married stopper or a reproduction cutting corners.

Step four: the label and lettering

With the manufacturing window set, the label refines it. Fired enamel labels, label-under-glass panels, recessed paper labels, and modern decals each belong to identifiable practice, and the printing itself — letterpress bite, lithographic smoothness, or the dot patterns of modern process printing under magnification — is dateable evidence. Embossed lettering in the glass ties into the mold evidence directly, and a pharmacy name in the embossing or label opens the archival route: city directories and newspaper advertising can place a named drugstore at an address between known years, which is often the tightest dating any bottle gets.

A genuine bottle's base, seams, finish, closure, and label all tell the same era's story; reproductions and marriages fail by disagreement — a machine-seam bottle with a "pontil," a crisp modern decal on hand-finished glass, a ground stopper rocking in a neck that never knew it. When the evidence lines converge, trust the range they give you. When they conflict, the conflict is the finding, and the bottle is telling you it isn't what the listing says.

Techniques overlapped for decades between regions and factories, hand methods persisted for specialty ware after machines took the volume trade, and no single feature ever dates a bottle alone. That's not a weakness of the method — it's the honesty of it. A defensible "third quarter of the 19th century, hand-finished, original stopper" outranks a confident invented year every time, in scholarship and in the market alike.
